Britney reborn?

In the new digital age, where information is everywhere and comment is free, how can all be so easily forgiven and forgotten in the land of celebrity?

Only a year ago Britney Spears was staring wild-eyed and bald-headed through the lens of a Pap’s camera. Last night, on the X-Factor, Britters faced a somewhat glitzier camera with Disney wide eyes and a tousled blonde fringe.

Rehab-ed, repackaged and reborn, Britney was back to her Madonna-imitating best.

Don’t get me wrong, I hate to see anyone hounded and exposed at their lowest  and I’m happy to see Britters back on top. But it’s a sad state of affairs when it really does seem that any publicity is good publicity. And it is that mantra that fuels the car-crash documentation of celebrities lives.

Britney Spears is one of those creatures of celebrity, weaned on Disney and catapulted to stardom aged 17, she has never known anything different. When she crashed and burned we were all there to witness it. And I can’t help wondering if our ‘bad press amnesia’ only serves to set her up for another fall.

This year’s other top renaissances:

Peter Mandelson: Out-in-the-dark Blairite profits from the financial crisis as he is reinstated to the cabinet.

Tony Blair: ‘No really, I wasn’t Catholic until after me and George prayed for the souls of a million Iraqi civilians’

Rio Ferninand: from the Premiership’s answer to Jeremy Beadle, to the elder statesman of the England camp.

Coming soon:

Michael Jackson: ‘I’m a little short of cash but I’m still BAAAD…’

Kerry Katona: the saviour and new face of Woolworths expounds the merits of Pick and Mix in a 5-year-old’s diet.

Who else? It’s over to you…..
